The confusion is understandable, because the two terms always travel together. But UV protection and polarized answer two different questions.
UV protection
UV protection is the filter that stops ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB. It does not depend on how dark the lens is, it depends on the treatment. A light lens with UV protection protects more than a very dark lens with no filter, which is actually the worst combination: in the dark the pupil opens wider, and without a filter more ultraviolet gets in.
That is why UV protection comes as standard on all my lenses, whatever color you choose.
Polarized: the comfort
Polarization is an extra filter that removes the glare from horizontal surfaces: the sea at noon, wet asphalt, a car bonnet in the sun. Reflected light arrives flattened horizontally, and the filter cuts it. The result: fewer reflections in your eyes, fuller colors, less fatigue at the end of the day.
Which one, when
On a boat, at the beach, driving: polarized, without a second thought. In Positano the sea is in front of you everywhere, and so is its glare. For the city and everyday use, a good lens with UV protection does everything you need. One warning: some screens, seen through a polarized lens at certain angles, go dark. If you spend the day between your phone and the car navigator, it is good to keep it in mind.
In my workshop
Every frame is fitted with the lens you choose: a range of colors among solid, gradient and mirrored, UV protection as standard, polarized for a small supplement. Some colors have their own rule: gradient violet, for example, only exists polarized, and gradient light blue only non-polarized. You will find the combinations on each model's page.
If you do not know where to start, you can look at the models and write to me from the custom orders page: if you tell me where you will wear them, I will tell you which lens I would fit. And if you are passing by the shop, you can try them with the real light of the sea in front of you.
