Wood is the finest material for creating unique, light, comfortable and natural frames. On the sample wall of my workshop dozens of species live side by side: ebony, rosewood, wenge, zebrawood, bois de rose, canaletto walnut, maple, birch, beech, mahogany. A true kaleidoscope of colors, and no two boards are ever alike.
How do you choose? Here is my compass.
For the classic soul
Ebony is the most elegant: dark, deep, never out of fashion. Canaletto walnut is its warm cousin, brown with soft grain. Rosewood sits in between, with hues running from brown to violet.
For those who like to stand out
Zebrawood needs no introduction: natural stripes that look hand drawn. Bois de rose brings rare pinkish tones. Then come the mass dyed woods: maple dyed blue, red, amaranth, where color soaks into the wood without hiding its grain.
For featherweight lovers
Maple and birch are the lightweights of the wall. Birch is also the backbone of every CREO frame: I use it in the inner layers of the front for strength without weight.
